My Minimalist Figurative Abstract Sculptures are the extension of this philosophy into three-dimensional space, exploring the tension between the recognizable and the symbolic through materials like acrylic paste, iron, and wood. My Journey
Hugo Madeira (HMad) From a tender age, the brush and canvas called to me, but life carved other paths. I grew up in a different Portugal, where dreams of being a painter like Picasso seemed unattainable. Nevertheless, drawing and painting remained a refuge, a constant hobby that always accompanied me. In 2018, after an unexpected and serious health challenge that forced me to rethink my career, I finally embraced painting full-time. This change was not just a professional transition; it was a reunion with a long-standing passion and the fulfillment of a dream that had lain dormant for decades.
As a self-taught artist, Freedom became my identity. This freedom manifests in every brushstroke, in every choice of theme and style – from Abstract Expressionism to Portraits. I do not limit myself to conventions; I mix techniques and materials, creating works that challenge expectations and celebrate spontaneity. My art is a testament to breaking barriers, whether in composition, colors, or form of expression, and in every piece, you will find the mark that defines me: HMad. The warm reception on social media and public recognition have been my greatest encouragement. Every sale, every share, allows me to continue investing in this journey, exploring new frontiers and deepening my artistic expression.
The highlight of this recognition was the "Unknown Pleasures" exhibition, held in 2022 at the Fernão Mendes Pinto Cultural Center in Almada, to which three other physical exhibitions have already been added. Furthermore, my work was distinguished with a Painting Award at a Cultural level in the Lusofonia Awards 2023, awarded by the Almada City Council. Today, painting is not just my profession; it is the purpose that will guide the rest of my journey.
